Mirziyoyev and Steinmeier Open Volkswagen Plant in Tashkent

On June 17, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier officially launched a number of major joint investment projects. Among them was the official start of vehicle production by Volkswagen — one of the world's largest automakers — in Uzbekistan.
The project to organize knock-down assembly of Volkswagen vehicles was officially launched in Tashkent. This is not a coincidental step — back in June 2025, Volkswagen signed an agreement on knock-down assembly of vehicles in Uzbekistan. Under the agreement, eight models of sedans and SUVs will be produced through knock-down assembly, with components supplied from China.
According to a presentation held in May 2026, the first stage will involve establishing knock-down production in Tashkent. The next stage plans to set up full-cycle production in the Angren Free Economic Zone, increase the level of localization, and enter export markets. According to Ulugbek Rozukulov, Chairman of the Board of Uzavtosanoat, 7 Volkswagen models will be produced, with vehicles planned for export to the CIS, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
