Volkswagen overtook Tesla to become the leader in electric vehicle sales in Europe in 2025
According to data from analytics company JATO Dynamics, Volkswagen surpassed Tesla in sales of fully electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe in 2025. This became another setback for the American automaker after Chinese company BYD had previously taken away its status as the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer.
According to JATO, sales of Volkswagen’s fully electric vehicles in Europe increased by 56% compared with 2024, largely driven by strong demand for the new ID.7 model.
At the same time, Tesla vehicle registrations declined by 27% during the same period.
In total, Volkswagen sold 274,278 electric vehicles in Europe in 2025, while Tesla sold 236,357 units.
Overall, the European electric vehicle market showed significant growth in 2025: registrations of fully electric cars increased by 29% compared with the previous year.
Meanwhile, the overall car market grew by only 2.3%.
The report covers data from 28 European countries, including Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
